Christmas Lights

The best memories from my childhood are when we went to see my Aunt Katie and Uncle Billie and my cousins for Christmas.  The older I get the more I cherish these memories.  We would pack up the car and be so excited to get there.  My sister and I would ask many times, "When are we going to get there? How much longer?"

The weather in South Texas was usually mild and we could play outside with all our cousins.  Our parents made us go outside to play but we didn't argue because we liked being outside.  Video games didn't exist.  Television was for watching after dark.  While there was sunshine we played outside.

We had several aunts and uncles who lived nearby and all of them would stop by and visit before or after Christmas.  None of us had a lot of money so we didn't all exchange gifts except with immediate family.  But we did exchange a lot of love and good times together. Some years when money wasn't tight we would give a small gift to everyone.  But the real enjoyment was being all together.

Christmas Eve was when all the excitement happened.  All the Moms would take all the children off to look at Christmas lights.  This almost always involved a trip to downtown Corpus Christi on beautiful Ocean Drive.  While the children were occupied the Dads would play Santa and put together bikes and other large toys.  They would place them around the tree and when we arrived back from looking at lights....SANTA had come to see us.  The Dads would say we just missed him.

So when my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday (my birthday falls in December) I asked to be driven around to look at the Christmas Lights.  It was fun!

My Irresistible Me Hair Extensions

Hi Everyone!

I bought some Irresistible Me Hair Extensions during the summer but never wore them because it was too hot.  I low lighted them as soon as I received them following two videos on YouTube. I bought them through Nisha's 10% off discount code on her channel called SugarPuffandFluff.  She also shows how to low light them.  I also watched the channel Hairgirl247.

I took them out a few days ago and cut them just a little longer than my own bob.  I mainly wanted them to give me volume rather than length.  Here are some pictures after I finished cutting them.

Here you can see how the back of my hair looks.

I am always trying to change up my hair.  These extensions give me an alternative to my shorter, thinner normal hair.

Weekly Fab Five Favorites

Please read my blogs  if you also love fashion, style, makeup, hair, health, books,
travel and everyday chit chat!

FASHION OVER 50

I just uploaded a video on my YouTube Channel about my Weekly Fab Five Favorites. My YouTube Channel is TexasCajun.

Products Mentioned in the video are:

  • Burt’s Bees Cool Collection, Kissable Color
  • Suzanne Somers 3 Way Poncho  (in picture above)
  • Target Black Boots (in picture above)
  • No Nonsense Denim Leggings (in picture above)
  • Dooney & Bourke Leather Shelby Shopper

In my weekly video I try to highlight one organic item.  This week I didn't have an organic item but I did have a 100% natural item.  It was Burt's Bees Cool Collection Lip Shimmer.  I like to have chapstick like lippies handy all over the house and in the car and at work.  This is a set of three I bought at Walmart.

I also bought the Suzanne Somers 3 Way Poncho in black.  It is a very comfortable top that looks great with leggings or skinny jeans.  I like how the back flows away from the body.

I went to Target on Black Friday for the black boots shown above and below.  I actually wanted the ones with fur but they were sold out of my size.

At Walmart a few weeks ago I purchased Denim Leggings by No Nonsense.  They feel like pajamas.  They are so comfortable.  I highly recommend these because they are knit not woven.

Lastly I purchased the Dooney & Bourke handbag from QVC.  It was a Today's Special Value a couple of weeks ago.  But it is still available.

Below is a small excerpt from my YouTube video.

Don’t Let Your Job Define Who You Are

Two of my friends on YouTube have led me to post this blog.  Their posts led to introspection which I thought I would share.

In 1999, my job became obsolete and I really didn't know what I would do next in life.  I didn't
know who I was without my job.  I was in a shaky marriage and I never had children.  It was a scary time for me.  My job had been training and the company decided to go more with computer based training.

I then became a teacher and loved it.   But I have changed careers often.  One thing that is a common denominator in all my jobs/careers is my desire to help others learn skills that will in turn help them achieve their goals.

When I moved here to Louisiana I became a Realtor but quickly changed over to help my husband with his company.  I could “retire” now, but I really like to work.  I like having some place to go and people to talk to.

I was so wrapped up in that first job for 18 years that it became WHO I was.  I vowed to never let that happen again.  When God closes one door he opens another.

If something similar has happened to you and you want to talk about it, please comment below and I will get back with you.

ON THIS ROAD OF LIFE
we will face many challenges.  It is how we deal with them that will build our Character!

Fashion Over 50, Skinny Jeans, Leopard Cardigan over a Long Lace Tank Top

HI EVERYONE!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

In this picture I am wearing Jordache Skinny Jeans from Walmart and the Leopard Cardigan is also from Walmart.

The long lace tank top came from Cracker Barrel Restaurant (but I have seen them everywhere).  My boots are from Born about three years ago.  They are SO comfortable.  I try to wear them as much as possible.  They were the inspiration for this outfit.

I have to change up my hairstyles or I go crazy so I used my waving iron from Vidal Sassoon.

Fashion Over 50, Most Comfortable Outfit Ever

Hi Everyone!
This outfit is like wearing pajamas.  I bought the brown pants last winter from Eileen Fisher at Dillards.  The fabric is so soft but still very substantial.  The two layered tops are from Cracker Barrel Old Country Store located in their Restaurant.  I bought these in the spring of this year.

Fashion Over 50, Last Year's Sweater Dress

I am wearing last year's sweater dress with this year's shooties and tights.
It was a warm enough day that I didn't need higher, regular boots.

Fashion Over 50, How to Wear White Jeans in the Fall or Winter

I have white leggings and ivory jeans that I hated to put away in my summer off season closet.  So I tried to come up with several different ways to wear them.  I got some ideas from Pinterest.  If you have other ideas please comment and let me know.  Below are three outfits with my leggings.

Below are two more outfits with my leggings.

Below are some outfits with my jeans....

Think outside the box.  Try on, try on, try on.  Even with your own closet items.

Fashion Over 50, Try On, Try On, Try On

TRY ON DIFFERENT STYLES:  If there is one thing I have learned on this road of life is to never dismiss a fashion trend or style without first trying it on.  You may not go with an entire head to toe look, but you might try the bottom or maybe the top.  You may not think you could wear a shoe style but if you get a toned down version of the style or a “comfort brand”, you may be able to wear it.  Don’t give up!

For example:  I thought I could not wear leggings/jeggings/skinny jeans.  I tried on so many pairs!  But I did find some Spanx leggings that I found to fit.  They are made of thick fabric and the waistband and pockets hit just the right spots.

TRY ON DIFFERENT SIZES:  Don’t let vanity get in the way and prevent you from trying on a bigger size.  It may hang better and cling less.  Remember designers use fit models and those models change each season.  That is why I have size 8’s in my closet and size 10’s in the SAME BRAND!  They both fit but one year a size 8 fits me and the next year I have to go up to a 10.  This happens in reverse too.

Using Same example:  I bought two pair of Spanx leggings last year in a size large.  But when I went to buy more this year, I had to size up.  They were also longer this year.  I can cuff them up.

TRY ON TWO IDENTICAL ITEMS IN THE SAME SIZE:  Believe it or not, there will be a difference.  Have you ever tried on two blouses in two different colors and one color fit totally different?  I started sewing before I was a teenager.  I was in 4H and we entered our creations every year in a community fashion show.  I think that began my fascination with clothes, fabric, and styles.  There were times I used the same pattern but chose different fabric.  I did this many times with favorite pants patterns.  I noticed that each pair would fit differently, even if the fabric was the same just in a different color.  If you try on something and it doesn’t quite fit and you love it, try another one on in the same size.  You may a find a perfect fit.

Using Same example:  I bought three different colors of the Spanx leggings all in the same size.  But the grey pair fit me the very best.

GO WITH LOTS OF ENERGY:  Don’t go shopping when you are sick or tired.  You will not feel like trying on clothes.  I sometimes break my shopping up into segments.  For instance, I will go looking around on my lunch hour.  I will pick out items I want to come back and try on later when I have more time.  I love ordering from the internet and from the home shopping networks.  However, many times I have to send back the items because once I try it on, it is not perfect.  I do send 50% of what I order back.

Hope this helps someone.  Don’t get stuck in a rut.  You can follow the trends if you tweak them to work with your lifestyle and body type.

Fashion Over 50, Inspiration, See It, Style It

This is an inspiration picture I found on Pinterest.  I shopped my closet and put together this outfit.  Similar not identical.  Shopping your closet is an inexpensive way to extend your wardrobe.  You can break apart outfits you normally wear and wear them in totally different ways.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  But why not give it a try.  It doesn't cost anything!

Inspiration, Obsessed with Leopard, Cream and Camel

Inspiration, Obsessed with Leopard, Cream and Camel

We all get inspiration from different sources.  Sometimes I get inspiration from my faith and sometimes from my family.  Faith and family seem to go hand in hand.

Fashion inspiration can also come from different sources.  I love to search Pinterest for outfits.  Here are some different inspiration sources:

  • ·        Pinterest
  • ·        Magazines
  • ·        YouTube
  • ·        Instagram
  • ·        Bloggers
  • ·        People in your community

Many times when looking for one item, another item will come into your view finder.
I was looking for some booties in saddle brown, luggage brown or camel.  A color I thought would go with everything this winter.  I went everywhere on this quest.  I still haven’t found what I am looking for.  But I did find a pair of awesome leopard booties at DSW.  But I didn’t buy them because they didn’t look good with my leggings.  My legs are really short so I have to be careful of anything that will cut them off and make them look shorter.

BUT THOSE BOOTS INSPIRED ME.

I thought I would incorporate Leopard/Cheeta in my wardrobe by small pieces.  I shopped my closet and found two scarves and a short jacket.  So I didn’t want to buy too much more nor did I want to spend too much money. I also know too much Leopard can be overwhelming.  Leopard/Cheeta comes in many color combinations and pattern variations.  The inspiration boots for instance did not have any black in them.  They were all shades of brown and tan.

I bought this Leopard purse by Karen Landry at Dillards.  I love it.  It has just enough black, brown and cream in it to make it classic.  It is also big enough for my Ipad.

I also bought two Leopard tops at Walmart.  The first one is a sweater cardigan.

The second one is sheer and has cut out details in the back yoke.

Find inspiration to make getting ready in the mornings fun.  This last year I have been watching YouTube for hair and makeup ideas.  I want to stay vital even though I am 55 and will be 56 too soon.  I want to fight this battle against Mother Nature.

Thanks for reading my blog.  Have fun on this Road of Life!

Life's Fashion Journey, Fashion Over 50, Make a Necklace

MAKE A NECKLACE

I have been looking for a pink pendant to wear on a long white metal chain for 2 years.  I have looked off and on at all kinds of stores.

Low and behold I found a pendant at Hobby Lobby in the jewelry making section.  It was only about $5.99.  I also bought the Abalone pendant you see in the picture above.  I couldn't find a chain at Hobby Lobby but I had one at home that I thought would work.

These pendants sat on my dressing table for weeks because I didn't want to use the chain I already had at home which is my Pandora necklace chain.  I thought I would never get it back to the way I liked it with my beads, charms, etc.

So, my husband and I were eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel and I was lucky enough to find a chain I liked.  I also found the fleur de lis charm and the pink sparkle bead at Cracker Barrel.

You can watch my YouTube channel for more details.  TexasCajun

So the moral of the story is:  Look in odd places for Treasures!

Life's Fashion Journey, Fashion Over 50, Outfit of the Day

Hi Everyone!

Please read my blogs  if you also love fashion, style, makeup, hair, health, books, travel and everyday chit chat!

FASHION OVER 50

Outfit of the Day

Don't you just love when you buy something new and you get it home and it perfectly matches something currently in your wardrobe?  I feel like I scored a touchdown!

I bought these Spanx leggings in grey and they matched the Eileen Fisher sweater (with a hood) that I bought last year or the year before.  Now I have a perfect outfit.  The sweater never really looked good with my Eileen Fisher pants.  They were meant to go together but I think this combination is more current/on trend.

I just purchased these shooties from Rack Room Shoes based on a Facebook friend's blog.

I had a white pair and a navy pair of Spanx from last year.  I never wore them much last winter because I didn't think my boots looked right with them.  But I wore them a lot in the Spring and Summer with cute sandals.  Now I have these shooties in black and beige and I think I can wear these all Fall and Winter and into Spring.

I tried on 49 pairs of leggings and jeggings and none of them fit better than these Spanx.  (Okay maybe I am exaggerating a little)  So, even though they are pricey, I went to Dillard's and bought 3 more pair for this year.  I bought them in grey, brownstone, and of course black.
